During the New Kingdom, Luxor was the capital of all of Egypt. Today, it still thrives as one of the major treasures of the country. This “City of Palaces” is home to some of the oldest remains in Egypt, an abundance of which can be viewed in the Luxor/Karnak/Thebes open-air museum. Temples, tombs and palaces still stand in this land of ancient wonder, in the midst of the City of the Dead, the Tombs of the Nobles, the Valley of the Kings and Queen Hatshepsut’s temple.
Nearby is the governate of Aswan, which is one of Egypt’s premier winter resorts. Set to a backdrop of pleasant winter temperatures and a dry climate, Aswan also showcases a wide variety of ancient monuments, as well as a serene view of the River Nile. Considered one of the oldest inhabited places in Egypt, this area is also home to the High Dam, which was built in the early 1960s and is still recognized as a crucial moment in the country’s history. Its construction also resulted in the creation of an enormous reservoir known as Lake Nasser – the largest artificial lake in the world.
