About the Birqash Camel Market:

The Birqash Camel Market is an iconic spot where hundreds of camels are traded every day, primarily used for farm work or consumption. The market is most lively in the early morning hours, especially between 7:00 AM and 9:00 AM, so visiting during this time will give you a true sense of the vibrant energy of the market.

The market was originally located in Imbaba, but due to Cairo’s urban expansion, it was moved to Birqash, a suburb on the edge of the Western Desert.
Camels from across Egypt and beyond, including Sudan and sometimes Somalia, are brought to the market after long journeys—some camels travel up to 40 days via Abu Simbel and Daraw.
Photo Opportunities: The market offers excellent photo opportunities, with camels of various shades and the colorful faces of the traders, though please note, it’s important to be mindful of the market’s ethical context.
Important Notes:

The market is open until 1:00 PM, but most of the trading happens before 11:00 AM, so arriving early is recommended.
Animal Welfare: While the camels are not in poor condition, the market isn’t necessarily a place for animal lovers, as the animals’ conditions could be better.
This is a great chance to witness local traditions, observe the camel trade in action, and capture some incredible photos of this unique and historic Egyptian market.
